The company announces Rs. 720 crores investment in setting up the infrastructure to boost production and sales of the new compact sedan, slated for a IAE 2016 debut.
Jaipur: Volkswagen is all set to add another model to its portfolio for India and in order to do so, it has invested about Rs. 720 crore in designing and developing this new product. The new car will fall under the compact sedan category and will compete against the likes of Ford Aspire, Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Tata Zest and Hyundai Xcent. The new compact sedan is expected to share its platform with the company’s successful Polo hatchback. Possibility also dictates that the new compact sedan will share some of its equipment and powerplant options with the VW Polo.
Even though there have been no official announcements made by the company yet, there is a strong possibility that the upcoming compact sedan might feature the 1.2-liter three-cylinder naturally-aspirated MPI petrol engine and probably also the new 1.5-liter TDI four-cylinder diesel mill. The powerplants will come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Company might just introduce an automatic transmission for its petrol variant, however, it is unlikely that the diesel variant will also receive an AT, thus, the Zest will continue as India’s only diesel automatic compact sedan.
